Name: Simon North
Specialist area(s): Financial services, management consulting, publishing & tech
My career includes working in a wide range of roles, sectors and levels. My interest is in how one manages work. I am an expert on careers and the quick rate of change for people in work. I am also curious about people, their development and contributions and how to create positive working climates.
After starting in personnel and in industrial relations I moved into consulting and operational leadership roles including being an International HR Director, Managing Director and later took on Chairing and Non-Executive Director roles. I have worked in many organisations and ecosystems, which give me a fabulous insight into business and an understanding of how some of the best-known organisations really work. I hold a degree in Sociology and Politics from Exeter University, and am a Fellow of the CIPD and was credentialed as a coach by the International Coach Federation in 2007.
I am an alumnus of Rolls-Royce, Shell International, PwC, KPMG and IBM. I have learnt about the engineering, manufacturing, management consulting, financial services and the technology industries and have worked across the world. I am an HR professional by qualification and an early adopter of psychological profiling into team development within Shell. My career has included marketing, sales and operations, which gives me real experience across a wide range of sectors and business functions. I’ve also worked in international consulting roles, recruitment and in interim management and have founded two businesses.
I am an experienced coach, mentor, business and career adviser. I co-founded what became a leading career consulting and publishing company, to support individuals who need their roles re-engineered and re-designed. I work with key people who are creating dynamic enterprises and those who have had enough and need a change of gear and of scene. This is often a personal learning and development experience for an individual with lots of value who might be wondering about ‘what next’. I also work with organisations to support mid and late career professionals through times of change.
I work with organisations where the need for creative and sensitive career management is seen as a unique point of difference for the employer. My focus is to create high standards of employment excellence in work and I have started this process as a creator of the IIP Standard in 1991. I am a a writer, speaker, facilitator, coach and mentor and my thoughts have been widely published.
