Name: Husnara Begum
Specialist area(s): Law, Journalism, Publishing, PR and the Civil Service
I studied Law at the University of Warwick before joining Linklaters, a top five City law firm, as a trainee solicitor. On qualification, I specialised in advising blue chip clients on public M&A and equity capital markets deals.
I left legal practice to pursue a career as a legal journalist and secured a role on leading business-to-business title, The Lawyer, where I spent almost a decade. In addition to spending many years as the City editor I was also responsible for researching and writing careers-related content for both aspiring and qualifying solicitors and barristers and was often invited to speak at industry events.
I set up my own consultancy in early 2013 initially focussing on legal recruitment before shifting more towards career coaching, outplacement and soft skills training, including time management, resilience, personal branding and networking. I also regularly run media training for senior lawyers and help them develop robust press strategies to promote their work. My corporate clients comprise a growing roster of City and US law firms as well as a top post-graduate law school.
As an Asian female and the first person in my family to go to university, I am a big advocate for boosting diversity and social mobility in the professions and especially enjoy working with people from disadvantaged or minority backgrounds.
“With her personable and perceptive style, Husnara quickly gained my trust and completely rebuilt my confidence through her tailored support programme. Without her expert advice, I would not have approached my interviews with the same determination or self-assurance, and definitely would not have secured multiple job offers. I would recommend her sessions to anyone changing firms.”
I also enjoy working with junior members of the legal profession, especially those graduates preparing for life as fully-fledged lawyers. Whilst as a recruiter I have helped a large number of lawyers to secure positions with the London offices of high-profile US law firms. I also work very closely with the Law Society and in addition to organising careers events for them I head their careers clinic.
