Who should sign-up? Aspiring City solicitors who want to boost their commercial awareness and gain an insight into training at a US law firm in London

CheekyLittleCareers is delighted to be kick-starting a series of fireside chats with the formidable Richard Youle, Partner and Co-Head of Private Equity at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom.

Back in the mid-1990s when Richard, a comprehensive school-educated lad, graduated with a 2:2 from Newcastle University prospects for him weren’t looking brilliant because most commercial/City law firms traditionally (indeed, many still do) required applicants to have a 2:1. But determined to pursue a career in law, and proving that gaining a 2:2 isn’t necessarily a be all and end all for aspiring lawyers, he moved back to his native Hull and managed to secure a training contract with local firm Stamp Jackson & Proctor. A couple of years later and now a fully-fledged lawyer, Richard joined Eversheds in Leeds where he started to focus on private equity.

Richard’s next role saw him move to join legacy firm SJ Berwin in London before he finally got headhunted by Linklaters. Then wowing his Oxbridge educated contemporaries, Richard become one of the magic circle firm’s youngest ever partners and went on to co-head its private equity practice before moving to White & Case and then onto his current role at Skadden.
